With in person gigs, clubnights and live dance music events illegal, Belfast duo Bicep are set to play a special live global stream this Friday night, September 11th. We really cannot wait for actual in-person live events to come back.

It’ll be an A/V studio show with visuals by Black Box Echo, and Bicep will be playing a mix of previous and unreleased material.

Inspired by new sounds, new technologies and the political events of the time, the early 90s sees the emergence of a scene that euphorically celebrates the dawning of a new era. In Berlin, Frankfurt and many other German cities, activists tinker on a new music and club culture oriented around the coordinates Techno and House. At Berlin’s Love Parade in 1991, different local scenes congregate for the first time. The trend turns into a movement.

A German Summer of Love, which changes whole lives overnight and kick-starts careers. The basic principle of Techno stands for experimenting, crossing borders and DIY. Fans become DJs or party promoters. Labels are founded and record stores open up. The scene grows. An independent microcosm is created. Networks are formed away from established structures. For a moment everything seems possible… WE CALL IT TECHNO! tells the story of a tempestuous phase in music history, the first time that pop culture was created significantly in Germany.

The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place mostly during the 1930s, beginning in the United States. The timing of the Great Depression varied across the world; in most countries, it started in 1929 and lasted until the late 1930s.

This film examines life after the roaring 1920s and into the devastating decade of the 30s. President Herbert Hoover, unable to deal with the great depression and the overproduction crisis, is replaced by Franklin D. Roosevelt who puts in action a new program – the New Deal – which promises to end poverty and unemployment. Meanwhile, demagogues, such as senator Huey Long, command wide networks of supporters and are willing to take forceful action.

The film ends with FDR’s reelection with a landslide in 1936 with the greatest political sweep in history. Great British summers may not come often but when they do people all across the nation start shedding not only their clothes but their inhibitions too and if summertime is party time the scorcher which was the summer of 1989 was one long party from beginning to end.

1989 saw young people were turning their backs on the rat race and throwing themselves into a hedonistic rush of new music and new drugs. It was as though the new generation has found their expression and all around the world other people seemed to be finding theirs. From pro-democracy movements in China to breaking down borders in Eastern Europe it was truly a time of change and Britain’s homegrown youth revolution sent shivers up the spine of middle England.

Featuring interviews with many rave promoters, newspaper editors, and the bands who made it big on the back of rave culture, we learn how the summer of 1989 became known as the “second summer of love”.

In 2007, Beau Miles attempted to paddle the 4000kms from one side of Africa to the other. Starting in Mozambique and continuing along the South African coast Beau allowed 5 months to complete the voyage. With him for over half the journey was Jared Sharples of New Zealand. Together the pair experienced the magnificent coast until Jared, crippled with sickness, left the expedition. Beau paddled alone for 6 weeks, experiencing for the first time in his life, a truly nomadic, solo existence. Battling huge surf, Beau only completed 2000kms of the original plan after realising that his trip wasn’t about kilometres gained but rather the quality of the experience.

John Arthur Johnson (March 31, 1878 – June 10, 1946), nicknamed the “Galveston Giant”, was an American boxer who, at the height of the Jim Crow era, became the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908–1915). Among the period’s most dominant champions, Johnson remains a boxing legend, with his 1910 fight against James J. Jeffries dubbed the “fight of the century”. According to filmmaker Ken Burns, “for more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth”. Transcending boxing, he became part of the culture and the history of racism in America.

In 1912, Johnson opened a successful and luxurious “black and tan” (desegregated) restaurant and nightclub, which in part was run by his wife, a white woman. Major newspapers of the time soon claimed that Johnson was attacked by the government only after he became famous as a black man married to a white woman, and was linked to other white women. Johnson was arrested on charges of violating the Mann Act—forbidding one to transport a woman across state lines for “immoral purposes”—a racially motivated charge that embroiled him in controversy for his relationships, including marriages, with white women. Sentenced to a year in prison, Johnson fled the country and fought boxing matches abroad for seven years until 1920 when he served his sentence at the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth.

Johnson continued taking paying fights for many years, and operated several other businesses, including lucrative endorsement deals. Johnson died in a car crash on June 10, 1946, at the age of 68. He is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
